From San Francisco Chronicle - 23 June 2002

Just 15 minutes from the centre of beautiful downtown CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND, is one of our favorite get-always that I'm certain you can't help but ENJOY! We have for several years been in love with traveling in New Zealand---land of exquisite scenery, unfettered by crowds, yet full of friendly Kiwis. This B&B is our favorite find of all!

"The Nest", as it is known, is actually a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home set in the woods with views of the Estuary, the sea, and the mountains. It is lovely and peaceful, with multiple decks to enjoy indoor/outdoor spaces. Within a few minutes you can be at the beach, walking in the Port Hills, or dining at some fantastic restaurants along the sea.

Best of all are the owners: Kai and Kathryn Tovgaard who actually live in a nearby home rather than on the premises. However, they are unfailingly available to make us feel at home---through warm greetings, patient assistance with local information, their scrumptious full breakfasts, fruit baskets and homemade cookies...TRULY WARM HOSPITALITY........

"Very quiet, magic place to stay at. Exquisite hosts."

From Diane and Carlos from Belgium

While preparing our 6-week tour of NZ South Island, we had discovered this jewel and did want to stay there while in Christchurch. Now, that we have been there, we are more than happy of our choice. Away from the heavy traffic of the town centre, this very nice wooden house sits on Mount Pleasant. Our room was very large with a full-equipped bathroom. We had access to the whole house including the large kitchen, laundry and terraces around the house one of which with a BBQ. We spent three evenings having a meal and drinks on the wooden terrace surrounded by impressive trees. The owners are exquisite and do whatever it is necessary for you to feel at home. They live just next door. Therefore, they are available 24/7 if necessary but are only present for breakfast. This is an ideal scheme. They both have plenty of fascinating stories to tell. So, if you are going to catch a train or a plane, keep an eye on your watch because time flies when you chat with Kathryn and Kai... A very pleasant stay on Mount Pleasant.

"A Nest with a heavenly view"

From Mary, Jacques, Vahna and Matt from Canada and Australia

With only one night to spend in Christchurch on our way to Queenstown, we made an excellent choice of B&B in The Nest on Mount Pleasant. It is dramatically placed on the hills south of the centre of Christchurch with an exceptional view from the decks and gardens. The gardens are lush and include their own little valley with lots of room to wander if time allows. We and our son and his fiancée had the spacious and well-appointed home to ourselves as Kathryn and Kai live in a separate home just down the street. There is garage parking, a computer with free Wi-Fi, a large and well-furnished kitchen and lots of space to relax, play games, watch TV, etc. Kathryn is a gracious and knowledgeable host who provided excellent driving directions, dining information and a delicious and hearty breakfast with timing at our convenience. She also provided information and insights into the city, the South Island and the route to Queenstown. As she suggested, we followed the inland Thompson Track and enjoyed the varied landscape of farms, rolling hills and dramatic vistas with almost no traffic. Our only disappointment was that we had to rush away fairly early from this beautiful home and Kathryn and Kai's hospitality.

"Home away from Home"

From Eimhin and Jonny from Christchurch/Ireland/UK

A lovely place to stay with a very homely and welcoming vibe.
Kathryn and Kai are very warm and helpful hosts, they couldn't have done enough to help us and advise us on where to eat/drink/visit etc.
The bedroom was awesome, bed was so comfortable, plenty of pillows! Really warm. has a heater but we didn't need it due to the amazing log fire, that Kai kept stoked all night :) The whole house is really clean and cosy, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need during your stay, including big screen TV with some great DVDs, loads of books, comfy couches and that lovely log fire. :)
Kathryn let us decide when to have our gorgeous breakfast, cooked to order, eggs how you wanted them and most important, beautiful coffee!
We had a great chat with both Kathryn and Kai that morning, they're full of life and stories, we'll definitely be back to visit again soon.
Thanks for everything :)

"A Real Delight"
From Jo from Brisbane
A Nest on Mount Pleasant is a great B&B stay in Christchurch. The house is very well appointed, clean and has everything that you need. There is plenty of space outside your room to relax, and the house surrounds are very peaceful and quiet. Delicious breakfast and excellent hospitality from your hosts score this B&B an 'excellent' rating

"The best place to stay in Christchurch"
From Jan and Tony from Derby
What a great place to stay - the self contained house has everything you need to enjoy your stay. Kathryn and Kai are more like friends than hosts, and nothing is too much trouble for them. They even lent us their own car to go out for a meal one night because we had already returned our hire car! Kathryn cooks a fabulous breakfast, and after she has washed up, she will get the map out and show you the way to the best sights in and around Christchurch. Both my wife and I fully recommend A Nest on Mt Pleasant - you won't find better!

"The best place to stay in Christchurch"
The Nest on the Mount Pleasant is exactly what it says in its title: a beautiful house built on a hill among the trees with eye pleasing views and a nice feel of privacy and tranquility. All rooms are beautifully decorated and equipped. The house is very spacious and a lounge with a fireplace is a real bonus, it's cosy but big enough to share with other guests, so you don't need to be confined to your room. The hosts, Kathryn and Kai, are delightful. They live in the house opposite but are always available at your first request. They both come in the morning to cook breakfast for guests and stay for a cup of coffee and a chat which is so nice of them! They really care and make you feel at home. We received a lot of helpful tips from them about the local area and beyond.
We loved our stay there so much that when leaving we felt like taking them and the house with us ;) The Nest was a real find. The best way to book it is to give Kathryn and Kai a call.
Room Tip: Both rooms are equally good. One is with ensuite, the other one is with private bathroom, but it's not a problem since the rooms are on different levels and don't interfere with each other, also bathrobes are provided.

"My best New Zealand accommodation!!"
On two separate trips to New Zealand, I spent a total of 6 weeks travelling around both islands. The Nest was by far my favourite accommodation! The guest house was beautiful, large and well equipped, with all of the comforts of home. The setting was gorgeous, in amongst the tall trees AND with a view of the bay. But, what really made my stay special were our wonderful hosts, Kathryn and Kai. From the very first few minutes after arriving, I had the feeling I was visiting with old friends.
If you are planning a stop in Christchurch, I highly recommend The Nest for a grand place to stay.

"5 stars are not enough for this place!!!!!!"
Having found the Nest on the Rotary International Website we emailed Kathryn and Kai and made the booking, from then on the communication was outstanding, Kai even offered to collect us from the airport.
We arrived in NZ after a 26 hour flight and headed straight for the Nest, easy to find and first impressions didn't disappoint. Kathryn met us on the drive and welcomed us into the Nest, this place is amazing - warm, peaceful and very inviting.
Over the next few days we settled in and got to know Kathryn and Kai, these people are so friendly, open and caring we felt like they were our surrogate parents!! This really helped as we have emigrated to NZ not knowing anyone here and leaving our family and friends behind was tough. Their advice and support have been invaluable to us in these first few weeks and made everything seem a little less overwhelming.
Kathryn and Kai invited us out for dinner - that night we also met some friends of theirs and as a result a job offer soon followed.
To Sum Up ~ If you want the 7 star service set in amazing surrounding, stay at the Nest!!!!!!
Room Tip: Every Room is Great!!!

"Romantic and Relaxing, lovely hosts"
I joined my husband after he finished playing the Rugby World Cup 2011, and we traveled through the whole country from North to South. This was our first time in New Zealand, and we were a bit worried about the trip working out. It definitely helped that the Kai picked us up at the Christchurch airport. We received a warm welcome and were invited to watch the World Cup games with the friends of Kai and Katherine, which was an additional lovely touch. We were delighted to watch the games in the company of compatriots of the Crusaders team.
We had the Kingfisher room, which is really romantic. This was the end of our trip, and I was attracted by the idea of relaxing in the 'nest'. The room overlooks the trees and one really feels as if it is a cozy nest. I noticed that Kiwi shower gel was provided in the bathroom - what a lovely touch!
The hosts are happy to devise your itinerary, and we were very happy with their recommendations, there is quite a bit to do in the region and we chose to enjoy the Hanmer Springs.
We wish we had more than two days to spend in this lovely home.

Staying at the Nest is the best choice you can make for your visit to Christchurch. What a gracious welcome we received there, and Kai and Kathryn went out of their way to provide everything we needed. Having breakfast and a chat each morning was a wonderful start to each day. Quiet, unobtrusive service and all the comforts of home, in a convenient and picturesque setting… what more could you ask for? Don’t bother going anywhere else, stay at the Nest.
